VMware vRealize and OpenStack: A Side By Side Look

There seems to be great confusion in the market around VMware & OpenStack. The reality is that VMware can actually provide a DefCore compliant OpenStack based IaaS solution in addition to the popular vRealize Suite. Choosing between these two IaaS solutions from VMware fundamentally comes down to the required consumption model presented to the end consumer of the private cloud. Do you want more advanced functionality such as governance, policy, and other features found in a Cloud Management Platform, or do you want to offer an ungoverned playground like OpenStack based public cloud.

VMware vRealize Automation automates the delivery of personalized infrastructure, applications and custom IT services. This cloud automation software lets you deploy across a multi-vendor hybrid cloud infrastructure, giving you both flexibility and investment protection for current and future technology choices. OpenStack software controls large pools of compute, storage, and networking resources throughout a datacenter, managed through a dashboard or via the OpenStack API. OpenStack works with popular enterprise and open source technologies making it ideal for heterogeneous infrastructure. VMware’s options for IaaS are explained in this lightboard which discusses the differences between vRealize Automation & VMware Integrated OpenStack.
